If you love history and enjoy experiencing all of the historical sites and museums that a city has to offer, Toronto has no shortage of places for you to visit! Whether you are planning a weekend in the city or a move, there is plenty to choose from when taking in all of this history in Toronto.

So brush up on your Canadian history, and plan an agenda that any history buff would envy. These are the best historical places to check out around Toronto:

Casa Loma

Casa Loma is a castle built in the early 1900s by Sir Henry Pellat as a gift to his wife. While he paid millions to have the castle built, the value fell precipitously over the next ten years. The style of the castle is 17th century, and some of the cool features of the building include secret passageways and underground tunnels, among others.

Today you can tour Casa Loma and take in all of its splendor. In addition to seeing the amazing architecture and features of the building and property, Casa Loma is also home to several exhibits on Canadian and Toronto history. This is the perfect combination for history lovers to experience in Toronto.

St. Lawrence Market

St. Lawrence Market is an indoor marketplace that has been operating since 1803. It was located on what was then called “Market Block” and was the first permanent farmer’s market in the city. It went through several changes, including a complete rebuild after the great Fire of Toronto, but it continues on despite the challenges.

Today, it is considered one of the best food markets in the world. You can visit to shop, or you can take a guided historical tour (or both!). There are a wide variety of food vendors, and this is the perfect place to visit if you like a side of food with your history.

Gooderham Building

The Gooderham Building was built in 1891 by the Gooderham family to serve as an office building for its distillery business. The building was the first flatiron building in North America and its distinct narrow structure sticks out in downtown.

Today, the building is a designated National Historic Site and located in the St. Lawrence Market neighborhood of Toronto. It is one of the most photographed landmarks in the city, and from certain angles, you can capture both the historic building and some of the city’s amazing skyscrapers, showcasing the historical and the modern. You can also view a mural on the back wall of the building and grab a bite to eat at the pub in the basement.

Whether you want to tour a historic castle, shop at a historic food market, or photograph a historic building, there is a variety of history to explore and enjoy in Toronto. You may find that you enjoy the variety of history in the city so much that you begin checking out real estate in Toronto to make a move. Definitely check for office space in “the flatiron building” if you need a place to work.
